Understanding how linux works and how to properly install?

I wanted to install linux. On the forums, everyone advises 15 GB for the system, a few GB for swap and some space for files. But my question is - where are applications installed in linux? In these 15 gb, where will the system be or in the partition that I will allocate for storing files? I need to separate the system from the programs as much as possible so that in which case I can reinstall it.

In these 15GB they will.
Therefore, 15GB is only enough to "try Linux" if you do not install any software.
I only have images, some docker images take up 15GB. So count on 60+.

I need to separate the system from the programs as much as possible so that in which case I can reinstall it.
Leave only /home when reinstalling.

for example, on some ubuntu or its clones without dockers, 30-35 GB (+ 2 GB swap) will be enough without a separate /home. But then you need to constantly reset your settings (like ~/.config/* or .emacs.d, etc.) and developments to some non-Linux partition. Of course, if they are needed at all ... All your Wishlist will fall into these 30 GB. Take a thinner environment - like LXDE, not GNOME or KDE .... (out of the first fifty on a distrowatchdotcom, every second or third distro comes as a clone from a clone and is already configured so that both music and film will work (as for games - not I know - it passed) and models for a blender and some kind of photoshop you can feel, etc. beauty (only desktop publishing - TECHovskoe do not take - there may not be enough space) ....
