Ubuntu hangs, where to read the log?

Hello! I am using ubuntu 14.04. Something often hangs...
Where can I see why this happens?

Everything is in the /var/log directory
First, let's look at:
dmesg | more
Then:
tail -n 100 /var/log/messages | more
etc etc.
Usually, suspensions are due to crooked or faulty hardware. Most likely your memory or hard drive is dying. However, it could be overheating.

A free video driver can hang some cards.
But in general - as you have already been answered, everything is in the logs.
