The effectiveness of the "PayPal Donate" button

Surely Habr users used the monetization model on their Donate resources.
Please share your experience.

It is especially interesting to learn about the experience of using Donate PayPal on resources with US / UK traffic, as well as Europe. Russian traffic is rumored to be immune to donate.

Interested in approximately the following: the number of donations per 1000 visitors and comparability with AdSense income, for example, the size of the average donation, the minimum threshold and the theme of the site.

Any information would be of interest, thanks.

From the words of a friend:
- a lot depends on the type of site: for a commercial resource, where advertising is already spinning, donations almost never come, for a non-profit, with the right organization, you can earn a little. He estimates that out of 1,000 visitors, 1 to 10 can deposit between $5 and $50.
- it is very important how to organize. If you regularly remind visitors, for example, in a mailing list, that the project needs support, then the number of donations increases tenfold. Moreover, it is necessary to argue the need for a donation, for example, by large infrastructure costs, and not just “I really want to eat.”
- it's just that the Donate button is practically useless.
In any case, according to him, it is very difficult to raise any large amount on donate. A competent commercial policy on the same resource will give dozens of times more income.

Doesn't work at all.
"A few years ago, when Punto Switcher was approaching one million (1,000,000) copies, the total donation was less than ten (10)."

It doesn't work well, you'll only make money on ice cream :) And advertising there also gives you a hundred times more income.
