The best monitor for development (+ laptop)

Hey Habr.

I read the question http://habrahabr.ru/qa/20695/ , but there a decision is made between the two chosen ones and there are no answers to some of my questions. I want to ask you for help.

First of all, questions in the style of “Which matrix is better for development?”, “What resolution is better, monitor sizes, dpi?” are of interest. I do not pretend to compete with firms, but I want to find out this base for the subsequent choice.

Also interested in the question of its connection with a laptop. The fact is that I always work on a laptop. I recently connected via HDMI to a 40" TV and I'm impressed with the area where I can set up a development environment. Can I "somehow" use this bundle of monitor + laptop and for what purposes can I organize it? In my view for web development, I need 2 monitors, on a large development environment, and on a laptop the result. How would you do it?

I have been using the Dell 2412M for web development for a year and a half now. I really like that the aspect ratio is 16:10 - these 120 pixels of height have never been superfluous.
The laptop is almost all the time of development in a closed state.
Only at certain stages of the project, such as layout or testing, I use the laptop display.
The sound is output to speakers compatible with this monitor model. (there is a power connector)
For control, I use a wireless logitech keyboard and mouse, the receiver of which is plugged into the monitor hub.
The actual connection of the laptop after the trip takes 15 seconds - usb, sound, power, hdmi. A laptop with an SSD takes about the same time to boot.
There was an idea to buy a 27-inch monitor with 2560 horizontal dots, but many models that I liked do not have an hdmi input (
DisplayPort is not provided on my laptop, and through an hdmi-dvi adapter (as I have 2412M connected), a resolution higher than 1920x1200, alas, is unattainable. Consider this A nuance
about the matrix: development is not games or movies, and response time is not so critical ;-) For me, the absence of glare was important - therefore, no gloss.
Fortunately, now manufacturers are no longer flooding the market with sheer gloss, and there is plenty to choose from.

If there is a need for a second screen, the monitor rotates slightly (fortunately, a very convenient stand) and the laptop is placed where it is more convenient.

Looked characteristics of this monitor and there was a question. Does its swivel mechanism allow you to rotate the monitor all the way to portrait mode? Sometimes there are situations when a function is written on 100 lines and a good height for viewing this function would not be superfluous.
And so, I really liked its ergonomics and the ability to twist as it is more convenient.
Your laptop is good - a good discrete graphics card will allow you to not only develop at high resolution, but also play games at nominal resolution.

I always work under Linux, so I'm not sure how I will react to this yet. But when connected via HDMI TV picked up immediately.
As for the games, then of course there is Windows on the side in case of a break from work and I would like to see it in action :)
The only thing I remember looking at the characteristics of the webcam is that it is not very convenient to use it in this configuration. For a comfortable video chat, you will need to either buy a separate one or chat without a monitor.

I rarely use web chat, so this is not the main problem. Usually voice chat and all.

I have a Dell U3011 30". For development, a resolution of 2560x1600 is great. (If, of course, your laptop can pull it in terms of performance and the video subsystem in general)
IPS is also a good factor in this regard:
- normal angles (which is important for such sizes),
- no annoying colorshift, like MVA
- good and correct color
+ plus all sorts of little things, such as a whole zoo of connectors and a card reader.
It's Dell, because it does not flicker. (Some praise Philips) My eyes are susceptible to this. NEC for my eyes It 's unbearable at all.
Expensive, of course. But I like it.
There is also one small monitor next to it. 2 monitors for development - that's it.
It is possible, probably, and 27 "(2560x1600) plus 20" (or this your laptop). It will be much cheaper.
Or two of 27" or 24" (1920x1200).
It's already to your taste.
DisplayPort will be a plus, because now there is a confident transition to this standard everywhere.
How to use a laptop? It depends on the available video ports on the laptop. There are special devices-splitters for connecting to laptops of various peripherals.
Alternatively, you can assemble an additional inexpensive computer (within 5-7 thousand), as a thin client. Patch the terminal service on the laptop if the development is on Windows and use the laptop remotely.
