In DVI, as far as I understand, it is possible to transmit not only a video signal, but also control signals. Thus, in theory, using special software, you can switch the monitor between signal sources d-sub -> DVI and vice versa. Is it so?
Dell 2209 WAF monitor.

I don't know about the Dell 2209, but on my Dell U2312H and U2312HM, I can freely switch sources via DCC/CI. You can try using the softMCCS tool, if it can switch, then you can literally write a switcher in 20 lines of code in C.
