Skype alternative based on jabber?
Comrades, Skype got it and it's been terribly annoying lately. I decided with my friend to find an alternative. As a result, we stopped on the basis of the XMPP protocol, because. learned that it supports audio and video conferences. But now we can't choose the right jabber server and the right jabber client. Dear Khabrovites, I ask for your advice, which client, server, and what kind of protocol to choose? And preferably with detailed instructions on how to set up audio and video communications.

I use qip for video calls. Perhaps it also supports conferences - I haven’t tried it ...
SIP softphones can call directly over IP, but video conferences are already an asterisk or its analogue
I once asked myself a similar question. I settled on Jitsi
Poles:
- Support for voice and video
- ZRTP encryption
- Support for jingle nodes (XEP-0278). Ability to communicate if both interlocutors behind NAT'om. Requires server side support.
- Open source
Cons:
- On java. Does n't fit well
- Builds prior to 1.0 were pretty buggy. With the release of version 1.0, the situation has improved, but sometimes you have to restart the program.
Now Cisco is forcing its jabber CiscoJabberVideo . True, I didn’t like it and it works rather strangely (on the server you can log in through the Jabber client with one password, and then on their website with another, and it turns out, as it were, two accounts - some kind of nonsense).
