DDoS Protection

Shutdown of the server due to a DDos attack by the provider. Fine?

Hey!

Friends! I do not understand server administration well and I want to clarify a couple of points. Explain, please.

Yesterday, my server, which hosts several sites, became unavailable. I received an email from the hoster that the IP of my server was blocked by them (placed in a blackhole). In general, the state of the attack is unknown - maybe ddosed for 5 minutes, or maybe an hour - it's unclear. In general, after my letter, it was unblocked. The server has been unavailable for 14 hours.

The problem is that before, if there was a ddos, it lasted an hour or two, the server hung, and when the attacks stopped, it worked again. Now it turns out that ddosed for 3 minutes, and the site did not work for 14 hours. Something is not normal. ;(

They tell me: “As a result of DDoS attacks, not only the target server suffers, but also the network equipment of the data center.”

Question: Is this normal? And what should I do better?

@sim3x

Look at the hoster's offer - when you paid, you agreed with it
Change the ip and set up cloudflare

Yes, it is normal. DDoS on your site can put the entire hoster, along with all clients. Therefore, in the contract there is a clause allowing the provider to defend himself. Buy DDoS protection or be patient.

It all depends on the host and its rules, so it's hard to say if it's normal or not.
Normal hosters are able to cope with such problems themselves + many have an inexpensive DDoS protection service.
And in general - it's over to blame him.

it's normal
when one client clogs a whole segment of servers, it's easier to send it to blackhole, even if it clogs for an hour, there will be dozens, or even hundreds of clients.
it’s easier to drop one, but it will be a hundred whole

Rent from a hosting company that promises protection, cheap is ovh

This is a bit of nonsense, because if the provider is normal, then he must first contact customers, say that he is being trumpeted, offer options for a way out of the situation, and then cut him down. In general, it's good when the price of hosting already includes DDOS protection.
Tucha hosting price includes cloudflare (free package).
