Running (and fast changing) multiple shells in android?

There is a "work" application that replaces the desktop with your own (Which has a bunch of restrictions). It is possible to launch other applications. But I would like to have the ability to quickly change the shell. If you uncheck the "default" flag from the working shell, the application does not let you into the "working functionality" until you make it "default".
I use Notification Toggle to launch other programs.
Does anyone have similar troubles?
