Router + usb hdd

There was a question of choosing usb hdd for connection with the router. It seems that the matter seemed simple, but this goodness is bought as a gift and I want there to be no overlays.
I don’t know the exact model of the router, but I can assume that this is a budget d-link or asus model. In any case, there is only one usb port.
What is the best choice in this case?
According to information,. which we managed to find, external 2.5 "hdd are pulled out by 1-2 usb. For 3.5" models, you need 2 usb or even a separate power supply.
How not to make a mistake in choosing?
Obviously, the option with a separate power supply will be just right, but I want to keep the "mobility" of the hard drive.
If anyone has a proven model that works from one usb from the router, please write.

PS Another stupid question. And if it is Usb 3.0 plugged into usb 2? As far as I understand, they have slightly different nutritional requirements.

Are you sure that the router supports disk sharing or alternative firmware? Perhaps the usb port is there for the printer. 3.5 with additional power is safer, budget routers do not always power devices well via usb.
