Restore a flash drive, but first make a backup?

There is a flash drive with important data on it
The flash drive opens but an error pops up

An error occurred while running ~$WXKWA.FAT
~$WXKWA.FAT is not a Win32 application

Found the answer here , maybe you can advise the best solution.
Plus, you need to insure in case of unsuccessful recovery, but how?

make a bit-by-bit image of a flash drive through r-studio,
and then work with the image.
