Recommend vim replacement?

Using bare vi/vim/nano is a pain. Drag vim configs and plugins to each server is even more pain.
Who uses what? Haven't invented a zero-config editor yet that can highlight and format arbitrary code to work via ssh in the terminal?

I had a wonderful multi-window console editor, but it was not written by me, it was written on the pluses, it doesn’t want to assemble on kernels higher than 2.6, otherwise it’s not an editor, but a programmer’s dream ...
