If only syntax highlighting and auto-completion of words already encountered in the document are enough, then Kate can be dispensed with.
I am using Kdevelop4 with PHP plugin. Features:
- extended syntax highlighting
- auto-completion for class names, methods, variables, etc.
- PHPDoc support (a brief description pops up in the auto-completion)
- integration with Git and SVN
- there is an integrated reference to standard PHP methods and properties, but I don’t use it and can’t say anything
More details can be found on the blog of the main developer of the PHP plugin (English language )
I've been using Geany since recently, a lightweight yet functional IDE.
Well, I look here "every sandpiper" praises his swamp :) Eclipse! Eclipse! It takes a long time to load - but if it does load ... :)
komodo IDE but it is paid
komodo Edit is free but simpler
written in Python using Mazilov engine
support extensions like fox
gphpedit - very miniature, but I really like it (precisely because it is miniature)
recently moved to phpStorm 2 from NetBeans 7 beta. The computer is weaker than yours, but I do not observe the brakes. ubuntu 10.10. As mentioned above, you need to install the sun jdk. rather already oracle. by default there is open jdk and neither phpstorm nor netbins wanted to run under it.
Komodo Edit (free) / Komodo IDE (paid). Based on Mozilla + Scintilla.
Autocompletion, PHPDoc, Git/SVN/CSV/Hg/Perforce, xDebug, snippets and macros (in JS or Python), and much more.
Somehow, for fun, I installed all the plugins found by the keyword "IDE" for gedit. It's been more than two years since I've been working exclusively in it, completely forgetting about Eclipse. In fact, there are a lot of plugins ... There is everything you need (wires, inspectors, outlines, debugging in the range, highlighting, and much more), and all this is outrageously fast - it’s still written in C.
Eclipse is far from such performance. At some point, I simply did not want to work with Eclipse, precisely because of its obvious monstrosity.
Well, with these wishes, there is probably nothing but Java. But I would advise you a common option: installing a local web server + php, respectively. you will see all files as local in the root directory of the server, you can edit in whatever you like, even vim. I'm using kate, saved the changes, refreshed the browser, everything is fast and local. What will not happen is F5 debug line by line.
maybe it's worth thinking about realtime java?

how do you manage to make ide slow down.
my framework included its libraries, Zend Framework, Smarty, Doctrine ORM, Ptototype (js). Everything worked fine under Zend Studio 5.5 then migrated to Zend Studio 6 (on Eclipse). Sometimes it slowed down. BUT. ALL THIS WAS ON Duron 800 + 512 RAM. Of the tuning, only the java update of the machine was applied.
