If from the phone, then it is much easier than with modems and there are fewer wires. And if the light is turned off, the phone will still work for some time, and the modems will fall off immediately. With phones, it comes out cheaper if you buy an inexpensive BU phone.

But apart from management and monitoring, we did not see any other fundamental differences.

the difference is huge. from the phone it is convenient for you to do for a couple of people. when it doesn't matter if the proxy disappears for a while or some other bugs come out
of the farm with modems - this is a full-fledged gateway, with traffic routing rules, etc. .. and all this is put normally in the server room, and not on the knee, with normal software, billing and all the stray)

The solution on the knee differs from the server one not only in price, but also in ease of maintenance and a guarantee of work at the right time. From the same phone, check the work under real load, most likely everything will be very sad.
