Personal cloud storage - do I need an external IP address?
Good afternoon.
I am looking for a solution for personal cloud storage (backups, documents, music, etc.). I found such a thing as Seagate Personal Cloud (for 3+ TB), they say, you put it at home, and access it from anywhere in the world.
The question arose - does this NAS need an external IP address to work? Or does everything happen through a server (in this case, a Seagate server), and can this device be simply plugged into a home router?
Thank you.

Judging by the information from the manufacturer, for access via the Internet, you can use their cloud service - for access through a browser or multimedia application on a mobile device. In this case, you may not have a static external address (but I can’t say for sure about the gray address, although it’s not indicated anywhere that this can be a problem).
If you want to use other connection methods, such as FTP, you will need a white ip address, optionally a dynamic white address and a Dynamic DNS service supported by the router. The router must support NAT-PnP or UPnP functionality, and it must be enabled in the settings. Or you will have to configure port forwarding in the NAT of the router.
