Pentium 4 630 vs Core 2 Duo 6300, what to put?

I have a 2005 PC and was wondering if it could be upgraded from a Stump 4 to a Core 2 Duo? What is better - frequency or cores?

Only the second.
Even the top-end dual-core Prescott EE was not close to the first Core 2 Duo, even in a single-threaded or multi-threaded load. It's a pity to look at a single-core and with a rather low frequency of 3 GHz.
Because it was a qualitative leap in architecture. The parameters of these processors cannot be compared, they are radically different.
Something the first came across from Google of those years
. And be sure to check if your motherboard can do this processor. The fact that they have one lga775 does not mean anything, there were a lot of them and it is necessary to check.
However, in general, on the issue - it makes sense only for nothing. Check if your motherboard can do something from core 2 quad or unofficially from xeon lga771.

@stratosmi

Frequency is more important

The cache size is the same
TDP, manufacturing process, system bus frequency, number of cores is better for Core2Duo
The frequency and number of transistors are higher for the first (but not much)
And who forbids overclocking the CPU?
I would choose the second one.
