Odesk: which direction to choose to earn?

Hi all!
My task is to gain experience as a freelancer on some rare and interesting technology. I myself mainly write in PHP, JS, and as you can imagine, every second freelancer knows these technologies, and therefore experienced guys from different latitudes will not leave me a chance. Therefore, I decided that it would be good to study the PL in order to achieve the goal. As an option, I took up Erlang, besides its low prevalence, it seemed interesting to me. Now I am studying one book in English.
But I would like to hear from experienced sensible words.

You know. I know a man who makes $5-7k a month on apartment renovations (this is with the new rate).
Take care of what you can do. Reputation will come, and income will come with it. Well, if the topic is not completely dead, of course (although the Kobolites are well paid, for example, despite being dead).
