Netbook upgrade?
There is an Asus Eee PC 1101HA netbook with Intel Atom Z520, 1Gb of RAM and WinXP on board
Unfortunately, the netbook does not quite cope with its tasks - web surfing (Chrome, 5-10 tabs), MS Word, Excel, Skype, Python IDLE - everything works, but with such delays that it would be better not to work. Basic typing in a text editor often freezes for 3-5 seconds after each sentence, heavy sites like Facebook hang for 10-15 seconds.
Does it make sense to upgrade the netbook? Will replacing the HDD with an SSD give a noticeable performance boost? Will increasing the RAM up to 2-4 Gb save?

Question from the series, but tell me a fortune teller?
SSD on WinXP is better not to install, she does not know how to work with them. Such delays are possible in the driver, I have an older netbook model and everything works fine, nothing freezes.
First of all, it is to clean the system, it is possible to tune it with tweakers. You can reinstall the system.
But in general, chrome is quite voracious, maybe you should try changing it to opera on a netbook. And Skype loves well.
The maximum from the upgrade is to bring the memory up to 2 gigs. Based on the software, it seems that there is still not enough RAM.
I have Fedora with Xfce on my 1005P - it takes 190MB of memory, office / torrent / chrome / player fly, and often several users are logged in at once.
So I would advise you to try Ubuntu 10.04 or 12.04.
I agree with AxiPod. It doesn't make sense to change to an SSD. I had a similar netbook, the first thing I did with it was to install 2 gigs of RAM. Worked norms. Perhaps it makes sense to rearrange the system, but I do not advise you to install the opera. She eats a lot of resources. Especially the operating system. Try firefox.
4GB of memory will not get up, Z520 can only up to 2GB.
Replacing the HDD with an SSD is unlikely to help. In any case, look at the disk load - most likely it is zero.
But the loading of the processor is most likely 100%. For Windows and modern software, 1.33 GHz atomic architecture is not enough.
I have an Asus 1005HA netbook, the parameters are the same, only the old Atom N280. It has ubuntu 10.04 on it, there are practically no brakes, they only begin to be felt when Firefox and Chrome are running simultaneously with several tabs, given that Cairo-dock with OpenGL is still running.
The second axis is Windows XP, native, the story is the same as yours on heavy sites shamelessly in Chrome. Loading proca periodically throws out up to 90% and the cooler does not stop.
The piece of iron is simply becoming obsolete, it seems to me that we must put up with it and look for a lighter environment.
Some real experience. I have some kind of MSI Wind there, also on the atom.
First of all, I set another memory bar for 1 gig.
Updated the bios with the option to speed up the processor. I won’t lie, I don’t remember exactly, it seems to accelerate stably by 15%, but, however, the fan doesn’t turn off at all :(
I put the old SSD on 32 gigabytes, after the HDD with 5400 rpm, the difference is felt strongly.
Now Win7 works fine for me. Sometimes even downloading Visual Studio 10 and Photoshop CS4
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad e125 AMD Fusion e300 netbook with 2 GB of memory.
Immediately after the purchase, I replaced the trouser screw with an SSD and instead of the pre-installed seven, Arch rolled in. Well, a number of optimization actions (Google + wik, I don’t see the point in listing here).
Works very fast - no worse than many laptops. I advise you to try.
