Monitor brightness in ubuntu 11/04?

I can't adjust the brightness on my laptop.
In power management, I move the slider - zero sense.
fn buttons the widget pops up, they say the brightness changes, but nothing happens.
Already how many forums have not read, zero sense.
Is there any way to adjust the brightness? And then at the maximum by the evening the eyes hurt.

The same problem. Googled for a long time, counted the lunchpad. As a result, most people tend to lean towards a bug in Nvidia drivers. The bug has been hanging in their tracker for a year, if not more.
I saw several solutions to the problem - both using acpi, and including brightness control through the Nvidia panel by editing xorg.conf - it does not work on my Thinkpad T420. The only thing that works is to switch to tty via alt + ctrl + f1 and use hot keys to drive the brightness to the maximum. Then switch back to x.
If you want a 100% solution to the problem - bang the firewood of a discrete video card, everything will work.

The xbacklight utility saved me at one time. Besides her, no one could adjust the brightness on my old laptop. Suddenly help.
