Could you explain to me what this means:

Michelson and Morley compared the value of the speed of light, measured in the direction of the Earth's motion , with its value, measured in the perpendicular direction.

For some time now, I can not understand what it means that it is highlighted in bold. Could you show it schematically? (In the sense of Earth and Light in different directions)
