Linux + Logitech how to remap keys?

I use a logitech m510 + ubuntu 14.04 mouse, there are 2 additional back and forth buttons on the mouse and they work out of the box the first time they are turned on. I wanted to remap the functions of the keys, the task was completed using xbindkeys and xautomation all according to this goo.gl/I4uhu3 instruction. So I can’t understand why such crutches, because somewhere in the system it is indicated that the back button is back, how to change the function of the button without crutches?

xbindkeys and change assignments, this is xorg's utility, not a left crutch. But why xautomation is there is unclear. Here is my ~/.xbindkeysrc:
# Mouse buttons
"xvkbd -xsendevent -text "\[XF86Back]""
m:0x0 + b:9
# Keyboard buttons
"/home/evv/.scripts/show_battery.sh"
m:0x0 + c:244
XF86Battery
