Linux for old computer
Hello!
Available computer P3-933, SDRam 256 Mb, Geforce MX 200. Well, that is. nothing like this at the beginning of this millennium. I gave it to my parents a long time ago, but the trouble is that the windows on it show a wild slide show. I would like to install Linux, I hope that the video from YouTube and classmates will be enough for my mother. Can you advise which distribution kit would work more or less smartly on such a cramp? Browser/seasonvar only, nothing else needed :)

Your desire brings many problems on your head.
Take your old man to the trash and buy your parents a media player.
I still occasionally use a laptop: P-IV 1.4GHz + 256Mb RAM + 32Mb video. It's just a shame to throw it away.
1. PuppyRus Jeans 1.3 - runs surprisingly fast. (I recommend it + browser recommendations below)
2. Debian Sqeeze + OpenBox + chromium-browser (AdBlock + FlashBlock = this is a must! The browser will work much faster on any machine) + most of the programs used are console programs (at first it was a quirk , and then I realized that it’s really fast and convenient… but of course it’s not suitable for parents).
By the way, for classmates in general, you can use the mobile version.
3. Another option, read about thin clients.
In general, if you have free time and desire, then you can bother, but I would advise you to buy a tablet 10 for these tasks for your parents.
Well, in 2002, XP flew the only way on such typewriters, and after 10 years, for some reason, she began to show a slideshow ...
I kept Slackware 13
on a slot p3-500 with 256Mb 3-4 years ago . But it requires a file and immersion to create friendliness. Firefox (2nd still like) kept 4-5 tabs freely.
In general, qualification for tuning is required, but I think it will be the same with others on such hardware.
There is also Gentoo , but this is if there is really a lot of free time (well, or the goal is to figure it out).
UPD: But in any case, flash will be slow there, and html5 is not optimized for this. So video from YouTube is difficult (although it can work, I didn’t need a flash on the network then). Better still Windows.
Thanks to bogolt, kaladhara and Smolka. Wild disrespect to those who advise a new computer or tablet - this is contrary to the spirit of a computer scientist. It's not about money, it's about interest.
Damn, in 2002, 3ds max 4, photoshop 6.0, winamp 2.x, mozilla 1.0 with 5-6 tabs worked on this machine at the same time and nothing really slowed down. Modern technology is PPC. First I'll try to put it on the advice of the respected aforementioned Khabrovites, if it doesn't take off, I'll put XP SP1 and older chromium.
Altlinux 5.0 was in the "lite" version, required 128MB of RAM, I think you can try ...
Also on hearing for weak machines: PuppyLinux and Simply Linux
Windows 2000 + some economical browser like Opera (for example, the old version, without all those heavy HTML 5 effects) would be suitable here. In general, it seems to me that Windows is much better suited for weak machines, because the same Win 95 generally had 4 MB of memory in its requirements and somehow worked (yes, 4 MB sounds amazing in our time).
And as for the slideshow - you need to disable unnecessary services, remove antiviruses, etc., there are enough tips on this on the net.
You better choose not a distribution, but an X. It's already been asked here . You need a distribution based on XFCE, for example. Or a distribution specially focused on old hardware. And it would be best not to torment people and buy a memory bar.
Debian Lenny should work adequately. As a last resort, Etch.
There is an ubuntu 8.04 / 10.04 server option
, then we install X and the simplest browser
sudo apt-get install e16 xinit aurora
e16 and aurora have almost no resources, on a slightly more powerful machine (1.1 GHz) they work without a “slide show”. I won’t say for flash and video - I don’t use it.
I would say that only Windows 2000.
If it is possible to add RAM, then XP.
It makes no sense to install Linux - it will take a lot of time, it's easier to throw in, work for several hours and buy P4 with 1Gb of memory with the money you earn.
