Link two DIAL-UP modems

Is it possible to connect two dial-up modems with a cord directly, without the participation of a PBX?
On the receiver, as far as I remember, you need to dial ATA. On the "caller" I did not remember how. ATDP is waiting for a dialtone, which naturally does not exist. Tried ATX3D but doesn't work either.
Is it even possible?
As far as I remember, there is some voltage on the telephone line. Is it necessary to somehow “compensate” for its absence (a voltage source can connect to the line)?

Googled it, and right away.

atx1d and ATA worked on any modem. Minus - you need a dialer and the connection can take a long time if the two sides are out of sync (for good, you need to adjust the connection timeout register (s7, it seems) and the carrier detection timeout register, if any).
If you want to do without a dialer, then there is a leased line and dumb mode, but this is individual from the model.

What are you trying to do? It's easier to connect two COM ports

Modem brand question. I had a modem, which is 33600 by default, but if I connected a couple of noodles, I could keep in touch on gigabit.

Wash SHDSL modems are not as expensive as before. And these are solutions for them.

True, already answered above.
And besides IDC and some ZyXELs, the same US Robotics Courier "pianos" have a dedicated line mode. They kept a very good speed just on a copper pair.
