Kernel - refers more to the operating system.
Core - Applicable to application programs,
PS processors - you can not throw slippers, this is my personal opinion.

On StackExchange they suggest that the kernel is the kernel of a nut exclusively, and the core is the seed of a fruit. From observations in the context of IT: kernel - OS kernel, core - CPU core, engine - DBMS. It doesn’t matter, it’s just professional slang, and from the context it will already be exactly clear what exactly is being discussed.
