mpc hc, kmplayer, daumpotplayer, vlc, (s)mplayer - all freeware and/or open source. built-in codecs play almost everything that is possible.
Previously, there was a corporate edition on codecguide.com, based on FFMPEG, but now it is not, unfortunately.
And yes, k-light is pirated, maybe not now, but earlier, when installing it, a Pro key was registered in QuickTime, which, as it were, hints.
If you only need K-Lite for watching movies, then you can do without it. Now that MPC HC, that MPlayer chew everything and do not choke. By the way, well-known solutions for working with video also mostly come with built-in solutions for (de)coding video.
TL;DR No codec packs needed.
As an alternative, I can advise VLC - it has never been that it lacks codecs. And its codecs are all included.
VLC is good for everyone, no doubt, but recently I came across a couple of files in vp7 and for the first time he could not open something.
where did you get the idea that he is a pirate? This is just a quality selection of publicly available programs / codecs, under a common installer.
