Java: projects for experience, portfolio and employment for the position of Junior Java Developer?

The portfolio includes small client-server applications (chat, data catalog - not web), work with graphics (animation on user actions with the mouse), work with the database (MySQL + JDBC) and an archive of applications on topics from Schildt and Horstmann (for example, on work with collections).
In a word, not very rich yet. Advise medium/large projects. Preferably opensource. Where could a novice java programmer take part?
Knowledge level - java core.

I will express my opinion from the height of my bell tower. Quite a decent portfolio for a junior. Another thing is that there are not so many vacancies (if there are any in your city, there are none in mine). The probability of getting a job in a large company, say, a middle one, tends to zero, because no one will take a person without experience in commercial development. In addition, experienced people suggest that there are too many Java juniors and it might be worth switching to something more specific (Ruby). About the height of my bell tower: I myself have been writing in Java for a long time and started looking for my first job, but now I'm looking towards Ruby. However, with perseverance, anything can be achieved!
About projects. Here, either freelancing, or to generate the idea of a large project and implement it yourself. For example: Android game, Multiplayer game with a server, Backend for some service. Of course, ideas are perfectly combined
