Is www notation obsolete?

Good afternoon!
Recently I encountered the fact that the site does not open at www.site_name, but through http: // site_name
And about the question of why the transition through www is not configured, it was said that www is outdated and there is no point in setting it up.
Is it right to do so?

www can be useful when the site is located on a non-standard domain:
In the first case, it is more clear that this is a website, and not the name of some social network account.
Prescribing an alias is better than not prescribing, someone will write a link to the resource via www, or they will drive it into the browser and go.
Alias assignment, 2 seconds in nginx, you have to be super lazy to score on this)

www is used less and less.
but setting it up is a matter of seconds.
Therefore, you still need to configure it with www as well.

Right or wrong depends on the project.
In principle, www is already so outdated that there is not much point in setting it up.
The question here is better to ask SEO, not technical. It happens that the domain name sounds better without www, it's easier to stick it into the slogan without www, and sometimes vice versa.

www.site.dom is needed only when you also have ftp.site.dom on another IP (hardware), for example. The rest is an unnecessary anachronism, which of course you can continue to support. Nobody interferes.

A professional approach is to immediately separate services into subdomains and hardware, for example:
etc.

I do that too. www is superfluous and I do not give anyone links to sites that work without www.
On the other hand, you can add a redirect from www, for some sites this may be important.
