Is this idea realistic?

It is necessary to implement the physics of water, but .. this water must be able to exchange heat, transform into other aggregate states, and so on. There is an idea to represent water as a large number of small balls. That is, each ball will have its own physics, it will exchange heat with other balls, thereby it will be possible to transform each of them into another object, whether it be ice (small cubes that can stick together with their own kind) or steam (small balls) .. How Do you think that the average processor will last such a number of calculations? If you know, advise how to do it differently?

There are many similar games: The Powder Toy , Vessel , PixelJunk™ Shooter , Sprinkle , Where's My Water? . In such games, it is very difficult to achieve good performance and get a beautiful picture, the task is not trivial. I would suggest starting by reading fluid simulation articles on Google Scholar , there are others besides the ball approach. You can do this on the unit, but you will most likely have to forget about the built-in physics. I strongly recommend that you take a closer look at the problem before adding additional complexities from above, such as heat exchange.

It will pull without any problems, a very simple task, you don’t need to simulate as many molecules as there are in a barrel of water, only two dozen are enough.
But in my opinion, there is not enough realism, instead of a ball, a full-fledged model of a molecule of three balls is better, and yet, converting balls into something is not a good idea, in reality, a heated molecule looks the same as an ice one, the difference is precisely at the level of accumulation of molecules - mobility, density, and if you want to beautifully visualize the temperature, then it's better to just change the color scheme, in general, choose what is more important - beauty or realism.
