Which book on Java will be the most effective for a not-quite-beginner?
Good day! I'm not completely new to Java programming (I took a course from 1C). I know the basics. Recommend a book that contains as little water as possible and as much useful information as possible.

Watching what you want. To pump further into computer science, you can Sedgwick "Algorithms in Java". If you need some specifics of the type of web applications, you need specific books on technologies, Spring, etc. You can go to JavaRush to solve problems there (this is not Javarash advertising, I just studied with them and I know that there are really a lot of tasks there, you will get tired of solving). You can go to Udacity to study android there.
Schildt is a good book, but it's essentially a retelling of the spec.
Another standard book for javists is Thinking in Java / Java Philosophy, it is definitely worth reading.
