Version control systems

Is there a version control system for .docx documents?

I would like to put things in order with the storage and revision of documentation in our office.

Somehow it has historically developed that it is written in the ms word format. Unfortunately, due to some sloppiness, remote work and who knows what else, several times I had to painfully merge the changes made by different employees together.

We are trying to use a version control system, in our case mercurial. But it's inconvenient, because document files are not parsed , but treated as binaries .

Git is the same situation. Maybe there are some plugins or specialized systems?

PS: Programming documentation is written in text, most often in markdown, and everything is perfectly stored there along with the source code.
