Is there a good system for a weak netbook?

Good afternoon! I have a compaq mini 311c netbook. Gathered dust on a shelf for a long time, until I started to sort it out there.
With windows 7 ultimate it seems to be going ... but the soul asks to install linux. With ubuntu 16.04 ltc heats up incredibly. So what do you advise gentlemen ...
PS. intel atom n270; 3gb ram nvidia ionle; 160gb hard.

I use Debian 9.4 (minimal network installation) + IceWM on a netbook. Nimble, beautiful.
