Is there a difference where to change the volume, in the OS or on the speaker?

There are Edifier R1900TV speakers and an Asus Xonar DX sound card. Once I heard, like if the signal is linear, then you need to change the volume on the amp, and not on the computer, otherwise there will be overload, distortion, or something like that ... In general, the question has arisen - on my configuration, where is it more correct to change the volume, on the computer , in the OS or on the amp and is there any difference at all, can there be consequences?

Technically, there is a difference. Practically - where it is more convenient for you there and change.

with an increase in the power of the UMZCH, non-linear distortions grow,
it is probably logical to make the volume of the amp small, but to give a signal from the computer louder

The higher the low-frequency program level, the final output linear preamp stages, one analog goblin, the more pre-distortion goes to the ULF line input, so it is more logical to give the nominal level of the output preamplifier with minimal noise so as not to amplify them through ULF.
Definitely regulate the level of the hardware through the ULF. And in general, if you are an audiophile, spit and grind all these commutations, and if not, do as you like, anyway, PC acoustics will not really hear your mp3 rips anyway;)

yes, you need to keep the volume on the card to the maximum, the bit depth is not rubber.
