Is the speed cut when using an adapter from standard usb to type-c?

I have a macbook, there are only 4 type-c connectors. To insert a regular USB flash drive, I use adapters. Does the adapter cut the data transfer rate because of this?
And hence the next question, does it make sense to buy an external ssd with a regular usb connector if it will eventually work through an adapter?
