Is the Pentax MX-1 camera good in its price category? Can you recommend an alternative.
This camera should be about equally good for all types of shooting.

If photo quality is important to you, then, for example, SONY Alpha NEX-3NL shoots better due to a larger matrix, but in order to have a decent zoom, you need to buy an additional zoom lens, for example, KIT 16-50mm + 55-210mm.
There are also good options with a 4/3" matrix - olympus and panasonic. They are either the same or slightly cheaper in cost.

I'll tell you a terrible secret - you can take good photos even on the iPhone .
And from personal experience, my advice to you: do not be afraid of the "bag of potatoes", get used to it in a month. But a photo of even the best soap dish from the most mediocre DSLR can always be distinguished by the depth of focus.
