Is mathematics necessary in information security?

I am a PMI student and I am very good at mathematics, but I wonder how much an information security specialist needs it? What math is needed? Also, is physics needed, how much and which section?

genby_8 depending on what you mean by "information security". If it is a firewall to configure or implement prepared SQL statements, then mathematics is not needed here, but documentation for the firewall / library is needed.
And if you take it in a broad sense, then:
And yes, at the heart of all this lies the so unloved matan . Without a sane matan, access to all these wonderful sections of mathematics is extremely limited and ineffectual.

There are a lot of information security specialists: from paper writers to reverse engineers and from developers of security tools to sales managers.
Subjectively, I can say that the direct butt of the high school and institute physics is rarely needed anywhere.
Offhand, these are professions: analyst, developer, architect.
Spheres: cryptography, technical means of protection, software development.
But! few, just because there are many areas, and the above areas are in great demand, not to mention the fact that I have not mentioned a lot of things.
And most importantly, technical and exact sciences are needed not only to expand the Taylor series after graduation or be able to solve diffuses, but first of all, this is necessary for the development of analytical and rational methods of thinking. This is already a very useful skill in practice.
On the topic of what kind of mathematics and physics are needed - in technical universities this is the usual standard state program, if necessary for self-study - then the programs are easily googled.

Future information security specialist - a former information security specialist writes to you.
No. Need not. Maximum basic knowledge - nothing more.
Let's live in reality. Without these institute cryptography, matan and other heresy.
We were told from school that we needed it at the institute ....
We were coolly .. deceived.
Now for the skills.
Look at the teachers and their salaries. They are good mathematicians, physicists.
How is it - go into business? Draw conclusions. I didn't - do it.
