Is JavaScript a high-level programming language?

Yesterday at school, we were given topics for projects and told to write it in any high-level programming language. I decided to check if I can write it in JavaScript. To which the teacher with a frown repeated "In a high-level language." Yes, with the appearance that he does not perceive JavaScript for PL at all. But that's not the point .. Having come home, I began to find out what is low and high-level PL.
As I understand it, NU is a language that is written at the level of machine code (hence I have one more question: does it turn out that low-level languages do not require compilation?).
But JavaScript has its own syntax, and in general can we say that all modern languages are high-level? If I'm wrong, then tell me, in addition, what are the "world famous" and modern low-level PLs?

The teacher just does not consider JavaScript a language, that's all. Does it right.
