Is it safe to verify an account through a passport on upwork?

Hello!
I want to try to work on the American freelance exchange "Upwork".
This is my first time freelancing and I'm afraid that after verification something might happen to my passport data.
Can they be stolen or do something bad to them?

Isn't it easier to live, reasonably thinking that your passport data has long been freely available?

Now there is more trust in data security exchanges like Upwork than in government agencies (for the sake of interest, ask your acquaintances IP, how many minutes after registration of the IP, the first call from the bank came with a proposal to open an account).
In general, you should just accept that, by and large, everyone can easily access your passport data.

Enter the passport data available in any passport office plus a photo from the passport, that is, nine thousand people in Russia have access to it at any second, why don't you care?
