Is it safe to use Curl to proxy a website?

Such a question, if my site acts as a proxy for another site, is it safe to use the Curl library?
Do I need to check incoming post data? Is it possible to upload a shell to such a site?
There are no uploads or forms on the site, except of course the proxied site. Are all headers and cookies taken from the user and sent to the site being proxied?
Ps The proxied site is well protected and filters all data.
