Is it safe to store files in a WinRar archive?
There are some files (about 3GB) that you don't want to allow anyone to access.
If I archive them with WinRar and set a password of 20+ characters, would it be possible to crack it in a reasonable amount of time? Password - random characters and numbers.

I'll do without demagogy. Winrar uses the AES encryption algorithm with a 128 or 256 bit key depending on the version. And it is today a very reliable algorithm that is used everywhere. If your 25 digit password can be cracked in a reasonable time, don't worry, the whole world will have more problems. Therefore, use Winrar version 5 (key 256 bits) and do not forget about the crypto soldering iron, the hacking speed of which never depended on the encryption algorithm)
What is "reasonable"? Who is your opponent?
If any serious office - that will open.
Either by a supercomputer or simply by persuasion, they will persuade you to give up the password.
Any such defense does not imply unconditionality,
but a very specific situation with the enemy.
For domestic purposes - more than redundant.
But it is not clear why WinRAR is not satisfied with specialized tools.
Yes. I saw somewhere the hacking of the archive in a few seconds, like a brute checker. But if you want, you can write a decoder that breaks the encoding. Or just password cracking...
PGP
Winrar is owned by Russian Jews and those are the last people you want to trust :D
If you take the latest version, then AES256 is the same as in encryption viruses :) A password of 20+ characters in the full set ([A-Za-z0-9] and special characters) will give sufficient strength. But here, as always - if this data is really needed, for example, by Mr. Zakon, then they will use thermorectal cryptanalysis, which reveals passwords of any
complexity -three levels of encryption, because such data will not become obsolete even after 50 years, but an extreme case is taken - that all these 50 years the password has been continuously selected ...
