Is it possible to use owncloud without https and other security measures?

There is a VPS on Digitalocean with (one click apps) owncloud installed.
In the administration panel, it tells me that I need to hide the owncloud directory from the Internet using .htaccess and set up https.
Can they hack or do something else with this storage if nothing is installed from the security tools? What is the probability?
Owncloud itself is needed to upload and store audio, video and text files, and only I will use it.
