Is it possible to set the maximum amount of RAM in one slot?
I have a Samsung RV511 laptop. It has two slots for RAM, the maximum amount of which can be installed is 8GB. So, can I install one 8 GB RAM bar in one slot if the second one is inoperative and will Windows see the memory? As I understand it, 8GB is the total amount of maximum supported memory and it does not matter whether to set two bars of 4 or one to 8. If I'm wrong, then explain.

It's unlikely that the chipset/board layout supports this.
There are also single-sided and double-sided memory chips.
It is better to check directly in the store. Come on, buy it. They won't fit and you won't need to return it.
Usually the maximum volume is limited by
1. Processor
2. The size of one bar in the slot (that is, if the slot supports 8, then you can insert 8 into each and get 16)
3. OS version
In laptops, there may be an artificial limitation, so you are unlikely to be told about the laptop immediately. Indeed, check directly in the store, as advised by stratosmi
The readability and definitions of RAM are influenced by a number of factors:
If the processor is single-channel. And the chipset works with the 1st memory channel, then it will not work. And if there are 2 or more channels, then everything will work.
