Is it possible to recognize several characters at once using an artificial neural network?

I looked on the Internet for several examples of how ANN recognizes characters, but there they only describe the recognition of one character. And I didn’t find anything about a few symbols standing next to each other. For example, I wanted the network to recognize the value from the LCD 7-segment display.
For example, this is what I wanted the network to recognize:

Of course, you can
have such a word - factorial
if possible (the supercomputer is there at hand) - why not?

Isn't it easier to first segment the image, break it into separate pictures with one number, and then recognize them separately? For such a display, segmentation is just geometry, most likely.
