Some guys I know use some kind of X Separate Screens, which is built into the proprietary NVidia driver. In general, I somehow asked myself such a question, in one jabber chat they said that if you are ready to red-eye enough, then you can do this with your hands and a file, in general, I didn’t go deep myself. Perhaps it still depends not only on the presence of two displays, but on the presence of two independent video cards. What tasks are planned to be solved? Maybe look towards WM, which can work well with independent workspaces? For example, XMonad (a set of workspaces for displays is only bound, that is, you can open a workspace on one of the displays that was previously open on the other)? Or dwm, in which each of the displays has its own independent set of workspaces (which, with skill, can generally be implemented in XMonad).
