Is it possible to install the OS directly to the hard drive?

The essence of the problem: I bought a used laptop, I want to install ubuntu there (now it's W7), I go into the BIOS and there is no boot from a USB flash drive, I put it on OpticalDrive - it does not see the disk. Question: is it possible to disconnect the hard drive, connect it to another computer and install the OS. And then insert it back into the laptop, will it be installed in this way?

Install from floppy ;D
"I put the boot from OpticalDrive - it does not see the disk." - So not all models define the disk. Sometimes, to start booting from disk, you need to press F12 / F8 - or other keys while turning on the laptop. Read which one allows you to boot on your model.

In general, yes, but not any OS and not on any laptop. It is better to look for a solution for a specific model.
Well, if you now have the opportunity to boot, what prevents you from running the installer from under Windows?

On older laptops, it was necessary to switch the operating mode from IDE to AHCI, or something similar, so that you could start from a USB flash drive. It also happens that in the BIOS you can only set permission to boot a USB flash drive, and not determine the boot order from which devices.

Why not.
Even Windows can be installed in this way, let alone Linux.

During the initial installation of the OS, hardware is detected. But modern OSes can in principle do this at boot, so you can try.
