Why is there no sound from the speakers every time I turn on Ubuntu until I physically reconnect them?

Googling didn't help. I do not want to install Pulse Audio, since other nuances will begin with it. My laptop has a minijack output (combined with an audio input, for a headset, for example). On board is Ubuntu 18.10. If I plug in headphones/speakers while Linux is running, a dialog appears with the choice "Do you want a headset, headphones, or a microphone?", and I listen to music without problems. But after a reboot with headphones / speakers connected, the sound no longer comes from the latter until I plug them in again. What should I do? In Windows, there is no such behavior, since in the audio driver in a similar dialog I checked the box on the device by default.
