Is it possible to hide a project?

Hello! I just started reading about git and I can't understand... If I make my own project and want to use this version control system, then my project will be public. And you can only hide it by paying $7 a month?
Or is there some kind of limit or something else that will allow me to hide the code of my site in git from prying eyes?

Git and github are different things. No one is forcing you to use github.
If you work alone, you can generally do everything locally. If in a team, then you can use other servers, such as bitbucket, or install your own server (gitlab, for example) or buy a paid account.
