Is it possible to enable edrive or opal hardware encryption without reinstalling Windows?

Do I understand correctly that data on NVMe is encrypted by default, it's just automatically decrypted without a key, which means that enabling encryption should not slow down the system in any way? Although if it were so, why would a reinstallation be needed ..

In general, it shouldn't, but it can.
