How secure is it to encrypt a virtual machine on a public PC using Virtualbox? How resistant to hacking will the virtual container be?

Apparently - quite reliable, AES-256

If encryption is with a key that you bring on a flash drive with you, then AES-256 is quite reliable. If the key is stored "hell knows where" - and the reliability will be "hell knows what" :)
