Is it possible to connect 5 switches to routers, and 12 PCs are connected to each switch? What is vlan? Is it possible to connect two routers located at a distance. 1km using optics if the router does not have an interface for optics but only etherenet? ie he needs (routers) a media converter?

It is possible if there are enough ports. If you configure it correctly (and the equipment supports the necessary technologies), then it will also work.

What is vlan?

A technology (there are several of them, in fact), which allows, from the point of view of forwarding (forwarding) frames, to logically divide one switch into several "virtual" switches so that traffic in different VLANs ("virtual switches") does not interact with each other. The most common implementation is port-based vlan (switch division into virtual ones) and 802.1q trunking (traffic between switches).

There are two protocols ISL (created by IBM, obsolete) and 802.1q (standardized by IEEE).
