Is it possible to build a fusion reactor in the near future?

Hello!
I remember interesting moments related to alternative energy from university courses. I heard many times
about different magnetic holders, which, as it were, will protect hot plasma from contact with other parts of the energy system. But then, so to speak, he himself did not gravitate toward physics, and therefore some terms may be spelled incorrectly. They also talked about prototypes of engines that worked on plasma and accelerated to 400 km / s, if I'm not mistaken. True, such prototypes usually took several blocks and consumed a lot of energy.
I am interested in how things are going in science, especially in terms of thermonuclear fusion and energy?
Sincerely ,
Almik

Yes, but not within the CIS. Who will build it here? Shevchuk? Cords? Urgant? Generation Pepsi? 1.5 retired physicist from the 80s?

Are you talking about tokomaks? They have been built for a long time. For example, from the newest in Russia there is Globus-M.
The main problem is to make it produce more electricity than it consumes - that's it for now, alas. This requires a lot of money. One country will not pull this. Therefore, it was decided to work together with ITER, where our country has a prominent role.
