Is it possible to assign 4 different gradients to 1 shape in Adobe Illustrator via the appearance panel?

Why do transparent color gradients override each other instead of applying all together to the 4 corners?

This can be done, everything works fine, just there was some kind of bug, know that in Adobe Illustrator you can assign several gradient fills with different colors and blending modes to one shape.
